Questions remain about misconduct accusations against former high school athletic director

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY- There are still more questions than answers about why the former McCracken County High School athletic director is under investigation.

McCracken County Sheriff Matt Carter says Kris Garrett may have contacted a student or multiple students inappropriately using an electronic device. Garrett resigned as the school’s athletic director late Tuesday night.

We first told you about this by push alert in our app around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Many of you have been asking us about this on our Facebook page.

Were working to learn more about:

— Garrett’s history with McCracken County Schools.
— Whether he has he been disciplined previously for misconduct.
— Whether anyone else is involved in the allegations.
— What sparked the allegations.
— Whether charges will be filed.

We’ve asked all those questions of investigators and the school. We do know the sheriff’s department is looking into those allegations of inappropriate communication with students. We also know Principal Michael Celginski sent an email to teachers just before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday notifying them of Garrett’s resignation.

“Kris has stepped away from his position here at MCHS due to some personal reasons and a desire to spend more time with his wife and son,” Ceglinski said.

Ceglinski called what he got from a Garrett a letter of resignation. His letter was actually a one-sentence email.

“Due to some personal health concerns and a desire to find a position that allows me to spend more time with family, please accept my resignation from the position of athletic director at McCracken County High School,” Garrett said.

Garrett sent that to Ceglinski and to Superintendent Brian Harper Tuesday night at 11:21 p.m.

It took an open records request to get that information from the school district. Harper and the school district’s spokesperson, Jayme Jones, wouldn’t give it to us without one. Neither would go on camera and talk to us about it, even though many of you contacted us wanting to know what’s going on.

“On Tuesday, January 15, 2019, officials from the McCracken Public Schools learned of possible inappropriate conduct by an employee of the district. Given the potentially illegal nature of the alleged conduct, the district immediately and on the same date contacted the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, which opened an investigation into the matter,” Jones said in a statement sent to our station.

They wouldn’t tell us that employee was Garrett. The sheriff’s department did, saying the school’s athletic director was under investigation. Jones did tell us Garrett hasn’t been allowed on school property since Jan. 15.
